HISTORY OF THE BASILICA

The Sagrada Familia is a monumental temple designed by the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí. More than 140 years have passed since the foundation stone was laid and it is still under construction. The basilica was designed for the people and therefore could not be built with public money, which is one of the reasons why it has not yet been completed.

Chronology

1883: Antoni Gaudí takes over the project, a commission he combines with other works.

1885: The Chapel of Saint Joseph is inaugurated in the crypt and the first masses are celebrated there.

1914: Antoni Gaudí devotes himself exclusively to the church until his death.

1926: Gaudí dies and his disciple, Domènec Sugranyes, takes over the direction of the works.

1939: Francesc de Paula Quintana takes over the direction of the work.

1986: Josep Maria Subirachs is commissioned to create the sculptural groups on the Passion façade.

2005: The Nativity façade and the crypt of the church become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2010: On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI dedicates the Basilica to worship and distinguishes it as a minor basilica.

2011: The nave of the church is awarded the 2010 City of Barcelona Prize for Architecture and Urban Planning.

2012: Jordi Faulí succeeds Jordi Bonet as coordinating architect and director of the work on the church of La Sagrada Família, which continues in accordance with Antoni Gaudí's guidelines.

March 2020 The Sagrada Família Construction Board halts building work in response to the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

October 2020 Work resumes.

2022: Two of the four Evangelist towers, Luke and Mark, are completed in 2022. The tower of Jesus Christ is raised two levels, reaching the eighth level of the twelve that it will have and placing the tower at 125.85 metres in height. On 16 December 2022, the terminals of the Luke and Mark Evangelist towers, two of the four Evangelist towers that form part of the central tower complex, will be illuminated for the first time. The Evangelist towers of John and Matthew are scheduled for completion in 2023, and the central tower of Jesus in 2026.
