Meaning

The tree of life has been used by many cultures and religions as a sacred symbol. Charles Darwin used it as a metaphor for the evolution of descent and genetics.

In the Encyclopaedia of Britain it is known as the tree of knowledge which connects the sky with the underworld and the tree of life which connects all forms of creation.

Although it has different meanings depending on the culture or religions that made and make use of this representation, we can say that, in general, the tree of life illustrates the cycle of life: the roots are birth, the trunk that grows towards the sky is life and the branches that fork are the different decisions and paths that have been taken throughout our existence.
